Blue Lagoon
National Park
Size and Landscape
Blue Lagoon National Park occurs in the
Mumbwa District of Central Province. It
occupies an area of 420 km2 on the
northern side of the Kafue flats. This
was also originally a private ranch like
Lochnivar that was purchased by the
Anglo American Corporation and donated
to the Zambian Government. It achieved
its National Park status in 1973.
Most of the park is a flood plain owing
to its low altitude. The flood plain is
covered predominantly by aquatic grasses
and sedges. Rice grass is abundant in
the areas of Papyrus swamp. The open
woodland fringing the plains is
dominated by the Acacia, Combretum and
Terminalia. Fig trees are common too in
localized spots.
Habitat and animal population
Among the common mammals found in the
park are Kafue Lechwe, buffalo, roan,
sable, oribi, zebra, bushpig,
hippopotamus and crocodile. The park is
also an important feeding ground for
wild fowl. Many of the water birds seen
in this park include many that occur in
the Lochnivar National Park
