Kasanka National Park

Size and Landscape

Kasanka covers an area of 390 km2 and lies in the Serenje District of the Central Province of Zambia. It was also declared a National Park in 1972.

The park comprises an area of fairly flat to gently rolling plateau terrain. It includes extensive wetland areas and several small lakes. The Kasanka River, from which it derives its name, passes through the swamp and on through the park to its confluence with the Luwombwa. Miombo woodland is dominant throughout most of the park, but papyrus and Phragmites occur in the wetland portions.

Habitat and animal population

The mammals that occur in this park are puku, which is more abundant, and the sitatunga. Other large mammals are elephant, zebra, buffalo, eland, hartebeest, waterbuck, common duiker, grysbok, warthog, hippopotamus, lion, leopard, hyena, velvet, blue and moloney’s monkeys.

Birdlife occurs in the wetland areas where there is an abundance of water birds, including several species of ibises, herons, storks and ducks.
