Liuwa Plain National Park

Size and Landscape

This park is situated in Kalabo District of Western Province. It covers an area of 3,660 km2 and was declared as a National Park in 1972. This park was a game reserve managed by the Litunga of the Lozi people. Two large rivers, the Luambimba and Luanginga, flank the park to the east and west respectively.

The grassland, which is divided into a watershed type and a flood plain type, is fringed to the north, east and south by a belt of Burkea Africana woodland.

Habitat and animal population

Among the common large mammals are wildebeest. Liuwa contains the largest Zambian population of this animal. Others present are buffalo, tsessebe, roan antelope, red lechwe and zebra. Lion cheetah and hyaena are also found.
