Liuwa Plain
National Park
Size and Landscape
This park is situated in Kalabo District
of Western Province. It covers an area
of 3,660 km2 and was declared as a
National Park in 1972. This park was a
game reserve managed by the Litunga of
the Lozi people. Two large rivers, the
Luambimba and Luanginga, flank the park
to the east and west respectively.
The grassland, which is divided into a
watershed type and a flood plain type,
is fringed to the north, east and south
by a belt of Burkea Africana woodland.
Habitat and animal population
Among the common large mammals are
wildebeest. Liuwa contains the largest
Zambian population of this animal.
Others present are buffalo, tsessebe,
roan antelope, red lechwe and zebra.
Lion cheetah and hyaena are also found.
