Lower Zambezi
National Park
Size and Landscape
Lower Zambezi National Park is situated
east of Lusaka about 120km from the
capital city. It covers an area of about
4,092 km2. It falls under the
jurisdiction of Central Region of ZAWA.
The broad classification of vegetation
in the Park includes forests found along
the fringes of the Zambezi River and its
tributaries, woodland comprising of
mopane, miombo and acacia and grassland
found mainly in dambos, marshes and on
the Zambezi River flood plains.
Habitat and animal population
The major mammals found in the Park are
elephant, hippo, buffalo, eland, kudu,
roan and sable antelopes, waterbuck and
zebra. The carnivores include lion,
leopard, cheetah, wild dog and hyena.
The park has a varied bird life that
includes the notable species such as
fish eagle, herons, egrets, kingfishers,
ducks and geese, hornbills and vultures.
The reptiles include the Nile Crocodile
and a variety of snakes. The park has
great potential for tourism due to it
variety of game and picturesque scenery.
