Luambe National
Park
Size and Landscape
Luambe is one of the smallest National
Parks in Zambia. It covers an area of
only 254 km2 and is confined almost
entirely to flat country bordering the
east bank of the Luangwa River. This
park was also declared a National Park
in 1972.
Habitat and animal population
Luambe is almost entirely a woodland
park dominated by mopane woodland cover.
However, there are some small areas of
miombo woodland on free draining, sandy
soils away from the Luangwa River.
The park’s fauna comprises mostly of the
species found in the riverine region of
the South Luangwa National Park such as
buffalo, elephant, hippo, zebra, kudu,
impala, greater kudu, eland, waterbuck,
Warthog, leopard,
spotted hyena, baboon, vervet monkey and
lions.
The Park is a potential animal corridor
for linking North to South Luangwa
National Parks.
