Lukusuzi National
Park
Size and Landscape
Lukusuzi National Park is fairly a big
park compared to the Luambe. It covers
an area of 2,720 km2 and was declared
National Park in 1972. This park is
situated in Lundazi District and falls
under the jurisdiction of the Eastern
Region.
Habitat and animal population
The tree cover of the park is
predominantly miombo woodland punctuated
by dambos on which many of the grazing
animals congregate. There are numerous
granite outcrops, some of them very
large, which provide a habitat for
klipspringer.
Mammals found in the park include
elephant, hartebeest, roan antelope,
sable antelope eland, zebra, warthog,
buffalo, common duiker, baboon and
velvet monkey. Some of the animals
mentioned may not be seen because the
park has been affected by both illegal
and legal miners.
The Park has high tourism potential as
it has very good habitat for wildlife
and could save as the animal corridor
for animals from the Park to Kasungu
National Park in Malawi. It has a huge
potential for transboundary
conservation. The Park also provides
strong linkage between Luambe and South
Luangwa National Park.
