National Parks

Lusenga Plain National Park

Size and Landscape

The Park is covering an area of 880km2 and is situated in Kawambwa District. The park was declared a National Park in 1972.

The habitat of the Park is intact with very little disturbances. Vegetation varies from forest to slightly large plain with wetter miombo woodlands that is the predominant feature.

The drainage of the Park is made up of the Lusenga Plains, the Kalungwishi River, Mwinshi stream, Kalambanjira stream and Mufutukubi stream.

The grassland of the open plain is of a type widely found in Northern Province dambos. Around the edge, there are remnants of swamp forest and dry evergreen Marguesia forest. The remainder of the park is covered by dense miombo woodland.

Habitat and animal population

There is high frequency of sightings of the following species; common duiker, baboon, puku, eland, sable antelope, hartebeast, hippopotamus, velvet monkey, colobus monkey and elephant. Birdlife is quite rich in this Park.

The main tourist attractions in the Park included the big game, Lusenga plains and the waterfalls such as Lumangwe, Kabwelume, Kundabwika and the famous Mtumbachushi Falls, which is just before Kawambwa Township on the way to the Park.
