Lusenga Plain
National Park
Size and Landscape
The Park is covering an area of 880km2
and is situated in Kawambwa District.
The park was declared a National Park in
1972.
The habitat of the Park is intact with
very little disturbances. Vegetation
varies from forest to slightly large
plain with wetter miombo woodlands that
is the predominant feature.
The drainage of the Park is made up of
the Lusenga Plains, the Kalungwishi
River, Mwinshi stream, Kalambanjira
stream and Mufutukubi stream.
The grassland of the open plain is of a
type widely found in Northern Province
dambos. Around the edge, there are
remnants of swamp forest and dry
evergreen Marguesia forest. The
remainder of the park is covered by
dense miombo woodland.
Habitat and animal population
There is high frequency of sightings of
the following species; common duiker,
baboon, puku, eland, sable antelope,
hartebeast, hippopotamus, velvet monkey,
colobus monkey and elephant. Birdlife is
quite rich in this Park.
The main tourist attractions in the Park
included the big game, Lusenga plains
and the waterfalls such as Lumangwe,
Kabwelume, Kundabwika and the famous
Mtumbachushi Falls, which is just before
Kawambwa Township on the way to the
Park.
