Sioma Ngwezi
National Park
Size and Landscape
Sioma is the third largest National Park
in Zambia covering an area of 5, 276 km2
and is situated in the Western Province
of Zambia. It was declared as a National
Park in 1972. This was also one of the
game reserves belonging to the King
Litunga just like the Liuwa National
Park.
The sandveld of the Sioma Ngwezi
National Park supports good stands of
teak forests. There are also areas of
mopane woodland and patches of teak
mixed with mopane.
Habitat and animal population
Mammals recorded to have existed in this
Park are giraffe, elephant, buffalo,
kudu, tsessebe, roan and sable
antelopes, reedbuck, lion, leopard,
cheetah, hyena, baboon and velvet
monkey. Presently, a few sighting of
elephants outside the park near the
Zambezi River.
Few ducks are seen on some small pools
during the rain season. Other birds
include the chestnut – vented warbler,
greater kestrel, bradfield’s hornbill,
birchell’s starling, marico sunbird,
black-cheeked waxbill and acacia pied
barbet. Ostrich occurred in this park
but its now extinct.
