West Lunga
National Park
Size and Landscape
This park covers an area of 1,684 km2 in
Mwinilunga District. The park is
bordered by the two major rivers namely
West Lunga to the west and Kabompo to
the east and south. It was declared a
National Park in 1972.
The main feature of interest is the
Cryptosepalum Pseudotaxus forest, which
is characterized by dense thickets of
shrubs, climbers, scramblers and
saplings. A large area of this dry
evergreen forest type occurs in the
park. The other vegetation types found
in the park are chipya and the miombo.
Habitat and animal population
Among the large mammals found are
elephant, bush pig, warthog, blue and
yellow backed duikers, zebra,
hartebeest, oribi, puku, eland, impala,
waterbuck, baboon, velvet monkey,
klipspringer and sitatunga are common.
Blue monkey is found along the two major
rivers. Hippopotamus is found in the two
rivers as well. Birdlife is very varied
but includes the red-throated crested
guinea fowl.
